Hampden outfit snap up talented teenager

TEENAGE mdifield ace Raymond Montgomerie will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of his famous father into the footballing big time when he signs for Division Two outfit Queens Park later this week.

The 19 year old Saltcoats lad will leave Ardrossan Winton Rovers, whom he joined last season, to take his place with the Spiders and will positively relish the opportunity to play at a higher level.

Dad Raymond Montgomerie Snr also started at Junior level with Saltcoats Victoria, before moving on to Newcastle united, Dumbarton and then Kilmarnock, whom he captained to Tennant's Scottish Cup glory in 1997.

Winton boss Derek Frye stated "I am delighted for Raymond and it's good for the club that he is getting a chance to play at Senior level. It's a great opportunity for him."

"Everyone here wishes him well, he has done well for us and is a good young player. As i said before I will not stand in the way of any young player who wants to step up to the Senior game. He follows in the footsteps of the likes of our former players, goalkeeper Scott Johnstone, who went to Stenhousemuir and Ricky Little, who is now with Partick Thistle."

Montgomerie will join another Three Towns player at Hampden, Ardrossan's Damiano Agostini.

Frye meanwhile said his side had been the victim of poor refereeing in their 5-0 defeat against Neilston in the Citylink Scottish Cup Third Round. He said: "They got a free kick just after the break that lead to their second goal just after we had been denied one at the other end and right after their second goal we were denied a stonewall penalty. These decisions came at crucial times of the game. We can have no argument they were the better team and deserved to win but the scoreline flattered them. We can now concentrate on the Stagecoach Ayrshire District League and will be looking for a home win against Hurlford United on Saturday."
